Elk alive

Too exhausted to move, a bull elk beds down in the snow during the final hours of its life Dec. 14 in Kittson County in northwestern Minnesota. The bull two days earlier had tripped crossing a fence and mired its antlers in the mud. Ryan Muirhead, Roseau, Minn., was among the people who helped free the bull, and he snapped these photos two days later, just hours before the animal died. Muirhead later received a permit from the DNR to possess the elk.
