Sen. Edward Kennedy leaves court (1969)

Sen. Edward Kennedy is escorted by troopers in July 1969 as he leaves court in Edgartown, Mass., after pleading guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of the accident which killed aide Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy has died after battling a brain tumor his family announced early Wednesday Aug. 26, 2009. In a posthumous memoir, Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy writes of fear and remorse surrounding the fateful events on Chappaquiddick Island in 1969, when his car accident left a woman dead, and says he accepted the finding that a lone gunman assassinated his brother President John F. Kennedy. (AP Photo/File)
