Volunteers from the Team Camo Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources released 26 wild turkeys Wednesday near Erskine, Minn. The trap-and-transplant effort used wild turkeys from Wisconsin and included 20 hens (15 adults, five juveniles) and six toms (two adults and four jakes). The release was part of an effort launched in 2006 to establish wild turkey populations in more northerly parts of northwestern Minnesota. The DNR and NWTF teamed up to release 59 hens and 19 toms in 2006 and 39 hens in 2007 at sites near Thief River Falls and Red Lake Falls, Minn. Last winter, the partners released 10 hens, two toms and two jakes in Red Lake County, 15 hens and two toms in Pennington County and 28 hens, three toms and two jakes at sites in Polk County near Erskine and Fertile, Minn.
