The annual North Dakota high school boys and girls hockey tournaments at Ralph Engelstad Arena begin on Thursday and conclude Saturday. In the boys tournament, Grand Forks Red River is three wins away from an undefeated season. The last North Dakota high school hockey boys team to go undefeated in a season was Grand Forks Central, which accomplished the feat during the 1966-67 season.

In the postgame handshake line, Michigan Tech goalie Josh Robinson told Brad Eidsness: “That was fun.” Perhaps the goaltenders were the only ones who could feel that way after an ugly 1-1 tie in which neither goal was shot into the net. On the bright side, UND was able to gain a point and stay three points ahead of Tech in the battle for home ice advantage in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. The Sioux moved to 17-11-3 overall and 13-10-1 in league play.

Brad Eidsness said he doesn’t consider himself a backup goaltender. Eidsness stopped 19 shots — a handful of them of the spectacular variety — while filling in for an injured Aaron Dell and the Sioux topped Michigan Tech 4-2 on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The UND women’s hockey team tied its program record for wins in style on Friday night. Josefine Jakobsen scored an unassisted goal with 36 seconds left in overtime to lift the No. 5 Sioux to a 2-1 victory over rival and second-ranked Minnesota in Ridder Arena.
