Gilbert "Skip" NerbyIt is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Gilbert “Skip” Nerby passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 92 years and 7 days.
Gilbert Nerby was one of nine children born to Charles and Margaret (Bouchre) Nerby on August 15, 1921 in Grand Forks, ND. Skip was educated and also farmed in the Forest River, ND area before moving to Grand Forks, ND during his eighth grade year of elementary school. Skip entered the United States Army on February 17, 1941 and was honorably discharged on April 28, 1945. He served as a drill sergeant in the Timberwolves and received multiple metals including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star after being wounded in Belgium during World War II. Skip worked for Eddie’s Bakery, The Five Star Company and Grand Forks Supply for several decades, retiring at the ages of 65, 70 and 75. Skip’s love of fishing is legendary. The kids grew up fishing, hunting and taking their annual two week vacations in which he loved to do.
