He was born August 30, 1927, in Groton S.D., to Herman Henry and Ruth Young Eelkema. The family moved to Maywood, IL, and then to Duluth MN in 1936. The family maintained a home in Duluth, and also a working farm near Drayton, ND. Dr. Eelkema graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1944. He served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946. He graduated from college and medical school at the University of Minnesota. He finished a residency in Radiology at the Mayo Clinic in 1958. In 1959 he joined St. Paul Radiology and retired from that group in 1993. Dr. Eelkema loved farming and spent his retirement years on his farm near St. Thomas, ND. On October 22, 1949 he married Irene Jacobson, who survives. Also surviving are sons, William (Kathleen), James (Linda), Harrison, and John (Lisa);daughter, Elizabeth; brother, Robert (Virginia); sister, Ruth (Ben) Morgan; many grandchildren; great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Robert, son-in-law, Daniel(Liz)Vorum, nephew, Rienk, and sister Barbara, who died as an infant. A family memorial service is planned for the spring at Fort Snelling, MN.
