Nicholas Chalaturnyk was born to John and Maria Chalaturnyk on March 17, 1930, in Gardenton, Manitoba, Canada. He was the youngest in a family of eleven. He attended school near Tolstoi, Manitoba. At 16 he began working for the Canadian Railroad. He later enlisted in the Royal Canadian Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as a paratrooper. He worked various jobs including several years with Torro in Minneapolis and Motor Coach Industries in Pembina until his retirement in 1995.
