U.S. officials seek to contain damage from soldier shooting Afghan civilians
UPDATED: U.S. officials said they are working to assuage Afghan anger after an American soldier opened fire on villagers near his base in southern Afghanistan Sunday, killing 16 civilians. Afghan President Hamid Karzai called it an "assassination" and furiously demanded an explanation from Washington.
