Grand Forks’ Altru Hospital celebrated the birth of its own royals just as the British were celebrating the birth of their new royal in London Monday.
The hospital crowned Prince Ryan Eric Lewis, born 4:29 a.m., and Princess Liliana Rose Acosta, born 7:30 a.m., according to spokeswoman Angie Laxdal.
That’s a few hours ahead of the birth of the future king of Britain, who was born at 4:24 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time, or 10:24 a.m. Central Daylight Time.
In Grand Forks, their royal highnesses each received a crown, a onesie, a blanket and the key to the city, courtesy of Altru obstetrician Mike Brown. He also happens to be the city’s mayor.
Karla Miller, a patient-care coordinator, is credited with the idea of crowning the first babies born on the day Britain’s royal is born.
“We watched the news and thought it would be kind of a fun thing for us to do here,” she said. “We try to treat of our babies as special people and create special moments for our families.”
The first babies born on New Year’s Day and the babies who broke Altru’s annual birth record in 2012 also got special recognition, she said.
Though the Altru royals won’t inherit a kingdom as that other royal, their parents were more than happy with the royal treatment their babies got, according to Miller.
“They were delighted,” she said of the Lewis family. “They had some older children in the room who were emailing and streaming on Twitter to friends across the country.”
The prince’s parents, Kimi Liggett and Regonald Lewis, are from Chicago but now live in Grand Forks where Liggett is going to school.
Liz Malm, the patient care supervisor, said they told her nothing like this would happen in Chicago.
The princess’ parents are Guadalupe Hernandez Acosta and Pedro Acosta of Grafton, N.D.
Altru deferred requests for interviews from the local paparazzi, saying both sets of parents were tired from the day’s excitement.
