Now in its second year, the Grand Forks Park District Movies in the Park program provides families with a safe, free way to enjoy some North Dakota summer nights.
The season opened two weeks ago with a showing of “The Muppets” at University Park, where district employees erected a screen standing about 30 feet tall in the grass in the southeast corner of the park.
Cars filled the parking lot and lined the streets for blocks as families laid out blankets and lawn chairs in the breeze.
Tyler Kartes, a Park District employee, said the summer program was a great success last year.
“We’ve had huge turnouts,” he said. “About 300-400 people showed up at Lincoln and Riverside last summer.”
Before the June 12 movie began, children ran cheerfully around the lawn, pausing only to receive fresh coats of mosquito repellent from their parents.
Despite being located just off of University Avenue, the viewing area was quiet and comfortable.
The program continues at University Park on Wednesday night with “Madagascar 3.” Lincoln and Riverside parks are the other two venues for the upcoming showings.
Each night will feature a business sponsor. Opening week was sponsored by Pizza Ranch, who sold slices of pizza for $1 each to moviegoers as they watched the film.
(The film will start at sunset each night.)
