Mel and Kathleen Rude Hertel were married November 17, 1962 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot, ND. They celebrated with family and friends in August at the Rude family farm at Columbus, ND.

Children include Heidi (Brian) Eischens, Heath (Lisa) Hertel, and Darci (Chris) Wall. Grandchildren are Cole and Tyler Eischens, Lillian Hertel and Keaton and Vivian Wall.
