Soup to go

Look beyond the iconic red-and-white can for a couple of new kids from Campbell’s Soup. Whimsically labeled microwaveable pouches hold six globally spiced soups in the Go line, from Spicy Chorizo and Pulled Chicken with Black Beans to Creamy Red Pepper with Smoked Gouda. Gourmet Bisques boast four flavors, with Sweet Potato Tomatillo a taste-tester favorite for its delicate tomatillo-lemon tang brightening the mellow potato. Go’s hearty Moroccan Style Chicken with Chickpeas soup delivered a nice spicy kick.

Suggested retail prices: A 14-ounce Go soup is $2.99; an 18.3-ounce Gourmet Bisques is $3.49. The soup pouches are available at supermarkets nationwide. For more info: campbellsoup.com.

Flavored butter

Tired of spreading just-plain butter on your bagel or English muffin but not sure how to proceed from there?

An outfit called Twisted Foods is happy to bring you Twisted Butter — tubs of a spreadable blend of butter and canola oil in six varieties: chives and parsley; cinnamon, honey and brown sugar; blueberry, honey and lemon zest; bacon, Dijon mustard and green onion; cilantro and lime; and Portobello mushroom with the garlic and fine herb variety of Boursin cheese.

Twisted Butter is at SuperTarget, where the 7-ounce tubs are $2.99.

Hazelnuts to you

The latest from Jif is hazelnut spread — not peanut butter at all — in two flavors: Mocha Cappuccino and Chocolate. The latter is rather like Nutella.

At one store, where an 18-ounce jar of Jif peanut butter is $3.13 (17 cents an ounce), and a 13-ounce jar of Nutella is $3.79 (29 cents an ounce), a 14.1-ounce jar of Jif hazelnut spread is $2.99 (21 cents an ounce).

Vets eat free

In what has become an annual neighborhood tradition, local Applebee’s will again thank our nation’s veterans and troops by inviting them to their neighborhood Applebee’s for a free meal this Sunday on Veterans Day.

For the fourth year, Applebee’s will salute our nation’s military by serving more than 1 million free meals. Since Applebee’s first began thanking the military with a free meal, restaurants have served more than 3 million veterans and active duty military on their day of remembrance and respect.

Applebee’s is offering a menu including some of its signature and favorite items, including the 7-ouce house sirloin, bacon cheeseburger, three-cheese chicken penne, chicken tenders platter, Oriental chicken salad, fiesta lime chicken and double-crunch shrimp.

Veterans will need to provide proof of service, which includes U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement, Veterans Organization Card, photograph in uniform or wearing uniform, DD214, Citation or Commendation. Traditional sides are included with free entrees; two for $20 appetizers, upgraded side items or extras, beverages, desserts and gratuity are not included.
