Halloween Party Recipes for Kids

Recipes that are examples of some of the healthy Halloween snacks used in Altu’s Healthy n’ Fit program.

The first three recipes are examples of some of the healthy Halloween snacks used in Altu’s Healthy n’ Fit program.

Sticks, Stones, Brains and Bones

4 cups of popped popcorn

2 cups toasted Cheerios

2 cups pretzel nuggets or sticks

1 cup peanuts

¼ cup Parmesan Cheese

½ tablespoon dry Italian salad dressing mix

In large roasting pan, combine popcorn, cereal, pretzels, and peanuts. Mix together. Heat for 5 minutes in a 300-degree oven. Remove. Drizzle with margarine. Sprinkle on cheese and salad dressing mix. Stir to coat all pieces.

Yield: 9 cups.

Edible Play Dough (Doggie Poop)

¼ cup no-fat dry milk powder

¼ cup creamy peanut butter

¼ cup light corn syrup

Place all ingredients in a bowl and stir with a spoon until smooth and stiff. If not stiff enough, add 2 teaspoons of the powdered milk. Let children roll into various shapes (doggie poop) and sizes. It can also can be rolled out thin and cut with Halloween cookie cutters. After done playing, it can be eaten as a snack.

Yield: This makes enough dough for 2 or 3 children.

Shake Pudding (Dracula’s Blood)

½ cup cold low fat milk

3 Tablespoons instant vanilla pudding

1 drop of red food coloring

Place all ingredients inside a plastic zip-type sandwich bag. Zip bag shut. Let child shake bag to mix. Cut corner of plastic bag and let child suck out the pudding mixture.

Yield: Serves 1.

Note: 1 small box of pudding will serve 4.

Mexican Layer Dip

1 can fat-free refried beans

1 package low sodium taco seasoning

1 package of wholly Guacamole-Spicy

1 8-ounce container of fat-free sour cream

1 package fat free shredded cheese

1 cup pico de gallo

Mix beans and taco seasoning together to taste. Spread beans on to plate, to about ¼

inch thickness. Spread guacamole on top of beans. Spread sour cream over guacamole.

Sprinkle pico de gallo over sour cream. Sprinkle cheese on top.

Yield: Serves 10.

Approximate nutritional analysis per serving: 123 calories, 2.8 grams fat, 6 milligrams cholesterol, 661 milligrams sodium, 12.8 grams carbohydrates, 10.8 grams protein.
