UND has one last shot to win the MacNaughton Cup and Broadmoor Trophy this season.

The pursuit toward the two trophies that the team has coveted for so long begins this weekend with a home series against Alaska Anchorage (7:37 p.m. Friday, 7:07 p.m. Saturday, Ralph Engelstad Arena).

Then, UND will move to a new league, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, and it will be trying to win new trophies. What exactly will they be?

The NCHC is currently in the process of determining that.

The league sent surveys to each of the eight teams — UND, Denver, Colorado College, Miami, Western Michigan, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State — asking for input on what to name the regular season and postseason trophies.

“We’ve gotten some good responses back for both of them,” NCHC commissioner Jim Scherr said. “But it’s too early to say. We haven’t decided on a theme yet.”

The league could name it after a notable figure, such as legendary coaches Murray Armstrong (Denver), Gino Gasparini (UND) or Herb Brooks (St. Cloud State), or it could be named after a sponsor, like the Broadmoor Trophy — the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s postseason award which is named after a Colorado Springs hotel.

Although there will be no connection to Colorado Springs or the Broadmoor Hotel in the new-look WCHA, it will retain that trophy.

The NCHC is unlikely to name either of its championship trophies after the Broadmoor, despite the league’s offices being 50 yards away from the hotel and resort.

“We want to be respectful of the WCHA and avoid any confusion as well,” Scherr said. “We haven’t gone down that path.”

Scherr said that the league hopes to have themes for the trophies fairly soon.

“We’ve been working on a number of concepts,” he said. “Hopefully, in a few weeks, we’ll have something.”
