Marnie Thielbar, of Langdon, N.D., won The Cass-Clay Ice Cream Dream Flavor Contest on Wednesday. Her Oil Patch Prairie Praline flavor will be available in stores carrying Cass-Clay products by next spring.

Despite never making ice cream, Thielbar’s flavor was chosen out of over 140 submissions.

“I was surprised, I entered it on a whim,” said Thielbar.

The process began when she started thinking of fruit patches and berry flavors, and then it came to her.

“The oil patches,” she said.

With the oil industry becoming such an integral part of North Dakota’s history, she thought the name would be a fun representation of her flavor.

“To represent the oil itself, I chose brownie chunks and chocolate syrup,” and for the ice cream, a brown sugar and butter flavor.

Thielbar’s flavor competed against Grand Forks residents Ryan and Amy Christianson’s Buffalo Chip ice cream, for a year’s worth of free ice cream, $1000 dollars and an acknowledgement on the winning flavors cover.

And while she is thankful to Cass Clay for the experience, Thielbar doesn’t foresee ice cream-making in her future.

“I think I’ll sit back and stick with my day job,” she said, laughing.
