UND receives grant to recruit Indian mental health experts
UND’s Center for Rural Health is forming a Center of Excellence in Native Behavioral Health with a five-year $3.5 million grant it has received from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the university said.
The new Seven Generations Center of Excellence will recruit, mentor and retain promising American Indian, Alaskan native and native Hawaiian students interested in becoming mental health professionals.
Jacque Gray, research associate professor in the Center for Rural Health, will direct and serve as principal investigator for the Seven Generations Center. She mentors more than 20 Indian students in their research in Indian country. Their work has won awards from the American Psychological Association, the university said.
Gray, who is of Choctaw and Cherokee descent, specializes in mood disorders, preventing suicide and promoting ethical research among Indian populations.
UND to host astronomy events
The UND Department of Space Studies and UND Astronomy Club will host a “public star party” at 9 p.m. Friday at the UND Observatory.
Similar events are also set for Sept. 14 and Oct. 9 at the observatory and Aug. 31 at Clifford Hall Room 210.
The free events feature presentations on topics such as the solar system, space research at UND and NASA missions.
People may use the observatory telescopes or their own.
To get to the observatory, take U.S. Highway 2 west, turn left just past Mile Marker 346, turn right at the T-intersection, go one-half mile and take the first left, and then drive one-half mile. The observatory is on the left.

Merit scholars announced
Nick Gellerman and Christopher Liepold, both of Grand Forks, have received National Merit Scholarships. Gellerman, who was home-schooled, plans to attend UND. Liepold, a graduate of Central High School, plans to attend the University of Chicago.
