Pat Phelps, Grand Forks, letter: Visits elsewhere help patients appreciate AltruI know how lucky we are to have Altru, not only because I am a former employee but also because I saw firsthand how care was delivered at the other two hospitals.

GRAND FORKS — I have been reading the negative articles about Altru in the Herald and online and would like to comment.
I have been in the nursing profession for 53 years, most of them as an employee at Deaconess/ United/Altru Hospital. When my husband fractured his leg in five places in Colorado, I also had experience at a hospital there.
The care was unbelievably poor. It was only when I threatened to get a plane and transfer him back to Grand Forks that he got some care.
Then when we did get back to Grand Forks, we were sent to the Twin Cities to repair what had happened in Colorado. We made many visits there, and on one occasion when he was an inpatient, we did not have a good experience.
It is with these visits that I truly appreciated Altru and the care it provides.
Today, I know how lucky we are to have Altru, not only because I am a former employee but also because I saw firsthand how care was delivered at the other two hospitals.
It has been 11 years since I retired, but whenever I have occasion to go to Altru, I find the care to be excellent and the doctors and staff very knowledgeable and professional.
I sincerely believe we have an excellent medical facility. Perhaps it takes going to another facility to realize that we truly have an excellent health care system in our town.
