CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A congressman wants a federal mine safety agency to explain why statistics show its workers are more likely to get hurt on the job than miners and other industry workers.

The Charleston Gazette reports Minnesota Republican John Kline has written to the Mine Safety and Health Administration looking for answers.

Kline cites U.S. Labor Department data showing MSHA had a rate of 5.69 injuries and illnesses per 100 employees over a five-year period, compared with a rate of 2.81 for the mining industry.

Kline has asked MSHA about its plans to improve safety among its employees.

MSHA spokesman Jesse Lawder says the agency is reviewing Kline's request.

Federal data shows MSHA's injury and illness rate dropped from 6.7 per 100 employees in 2008 to 5.2 last year.
