Henry Joseph Tretter, age 83, of Larimore, ND, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Valley Eldercare Transitional Care Unit in Grand Forks, ND.

Henry Joseph Tretter, age 83, of Larimore, ND, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Valley Eldercare Transitional Care Unit in Grand Forks, ND.

Henry was born to Joseph and Julia (Schmidtbaurer) Tretter on February 29, 1928 at home in Melrose Township near Blabon, ND. He grew up in the Hope, ND area and attended school in Blabon. He was baptized, made first communion and was confirmed in St. Agatha's Catholic Church in Hope, ND.

Henry enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1950 - 1952. He worked on the family farm with his dad, until he was united in marriage to Carol Nelson on June 7, 1955. He and Carol then moved to Larimore where he worked for Eckhoff Construction and later for Peterson Construction where he retired from in 1989. Even in retirement, he loved his part-time job working on the Don Shide farm during the summers. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and spending time in his sheds. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Henry will be remembered for his kind heart, wonderfully funny sense of humor and his love for his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

Henry is survived by his wife: Carol, sons: Daniel (Carla) Tretter of Larimore, Dennis (Cheri) Tretter and Duane (Kathy) Tretter, both of East Grand Forks, MN, Dale (Sheila) Tretter of Fargo; daughter: Doris (Andy) Heidt of Minot, ND; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and one due in March; sister; Joann (Vern) Schommer of Cottage Grove, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Andrew, Alex, Clarence, Richard and Albert and sisters: Lorraine, Helen, Marie and Sylvia.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2012 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Larimore.

VISITATION: Friday, February 10 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service held in the Bakke Funeral Home of Larimore. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Saturday.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Hope Cemetery, Hope, ND.

MILITARY HONORS: Ted Valerius Post No. 97 of the Larimore American Legion.
