GRAND FORKS — The recent decision by the U. S. Department of Human Services to provide more women with contraceptive care is sound public policy that will prevent unwanted pregnancies and, consequently, reduce the number of abortions in this country.
It is a pro-life policy.
Opponents want women to not have abortions, but they also don’t want them to have increased access to contraceptive services. This stance is inherently contradictory.
Abortions should be rare. One of the most important ways to make sure they are is to help as many women as possible to have access to contraception if they want it.
The argument that we should be able to dictate to insurance companies what they do with the premiums we pay them violates their freedom to operate their businesses as they wish and according to the law.
Personally, I would like to see my insurance premiums not go to patch up drunk drivers, but that is not my choice — nor should it be.
