Grand Forks welcomed its first baby of the New Year on Sunday morning.

A little boy, Daxton Knain, was born at Altru Hospital at 10:50 a.m. to Jennifer Knain according to Becky Gudajtes, a registered nurse working in the hospital’s nursery.

Daxton weighed in at 5 pounds 4 ounces with a length of 18.7 inches.

Fargo’s first-born

The first baby born in the Fargo-Moorhead area arrived without problems at 1:02 a.m. Sunday.

It was a boy, Dre-Dyn, and he weighed in at a healthy 6 pounds, 14 ounces even though his due date was still three weeks away, said his mom, Robin Gonzales of Fargo, who along with her son was resting comfortably Sunday evening at the Sanford Health Family Birth Center.

Gonzales said her water broke without her realizing it, but she headed for the hospital anyway on a hunch.

“Once I got here, I realized something was going on,” said Gonzales, who is expected to leave the hospital today.

Because she wasn’t able to have a baby shower, Gonzales said she’s hoping for some assistance in the area of baby supplies.

“Anything would help,” she said. “Pampers, for sure, and he doesn’t have a high chair.”

Another thing the youngster may need soon is a haircut.

“He came out fuzzy. He has a lot of hair,” Gonzales said.

Anyone wishing to assist the new mom can reach her at (701) 219-3990.

Gonzales said one of her relatives, a female cousin, shares the same birthday as her son, but the calendar connections don’t end there.

“Her brother has a birthday on the 30th of July, like I do,” Gonzales added.

Meanwhile, Ike, the first 2012 baby born at Essentia Health in Fargo, arrived at 6:43 a.m. Sunday.

Ike weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces, according to his mom, Anna Wittrock of Moorhead, who was home with her newborn by early Sunday evening.
