Sanford Health to manage Northwood facility

Starting in December, Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, N.D., will be under new management.
The center announced today in a news release that it has approved an agreement with Sanford Health to manage its facilities.
Through the agreement, Sanford will be responsible for the business operations of the NDHC. The center’s board of directors will remain in place and ownership will not change hands. The NDHC is currently owned by 11 area Lutheran churches.
Decision-making authority will stay with the governing board of the NDHC. Members of the board are elected by church owners.
NDHC’s CEO Pete Antonson and Director of Nursing Carla Sletten will be considered employees of Sanford Health.
The agreement lays the groundwork for expansion. Access to Sanford resources has already yielded new care programs such radiology and psychiatric services at the NDHC, according to a news release.
The center’s current facility employs more than 200 and includes a 12-bed hospital, 61-bed skilled-nursing facility, six assisted-living units, 10 independent-living units, a laboratory and x-ray services.
The facility also houses physical rehabilitation and occupational therapy, cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation, ambulance services and a community fitness center.
Sanford Health maintains several levels of relationships with hospitals ranging from associate, managed, leased and owned status.
According to the release, the agreement between NDHC and Sanford developed from a longstanding relationship with clinics and hospitals in the Northwood area including: Sanford Health East Grand Forks Clinic, Sanford Mayville, Sanford Health Hillsboro Clinic and Hillsboro Medical Center.
The Sanford Health system includes 34 hospitals, 116 clinic locations and 1,000 physicians in 70 specialty areas of medicine.
The agreement between the NDHC and Sanford Health takes effect Dec. 1.
