Grace Ivadell Frei, the daughter of the late Albert and Edith (Blomquist) Grandstrand, was born on Nov. 17, 1925, in Sinnott Township of Marshall County. She was baptized at St. Petri Lutheran Church near her home and confirmed at the Salem Lutheran Church. She attended both the former “Happy Corner School” and “Benson School”. Grace graduated from Karlstad High School in 1943 and attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. On Oct. 16, 1944, Grace was united in marriage to Vernon Frei. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in Augsburg Township of Marshall County until 1950, then moved to the present Frei farm in Nelson Park Township near Stephen. Grace was a life-long member of Salem Lutheran Church and served as church organist for many years. She loved gardening, quilting, crocheting, playing cards, word find puzzles and Scrabble. She worked at the former Karlstad Arctic Cat Plant as a seamstress. Vernon passed away June 24, 1987, and Grace continued her home on the farm. For the past year she has resided at the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock where she passed away on Fri. morning, Oct. 7, 2011, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 20 days.
She is survived by two daughters: Linda (Ron) Donarski, of Stephen and Lori (Darwyn) Anderson, of Karlstad; two sons: Allan and Gale (Fanny Schaeffer), both of Stephen; grandchildren: Kevin, Shawn and Terry Donarski, Ronalin Steer, Nicholas and Krista Anderson, Heleanna DaCosta, and Karen and Allan Schaeffer; several great-grandchildren; one sister: Bernice Hultgren, of Kennedy; two brothers: Dale (Beth), of Karlstad and Carl (Mary Jane), of Albert Lea, MN.; in addition to many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, daughter-in-law: Susan Frei; five brothers: Melvin, Delbert, Gordon, Paul and Robert; and one sister: Edna Nagle.
Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Mon. at Salem Lutheran Church near Stephen, MN. A prayer service will be held at 7 P.M. Sun. at the church.
