Work was expected to finish today on the rebuilding of East Grand Forks' Sherlock Forest Playground. After the playground was destroyed in a fire on May 27, 2011, the community vowed to rebuild.

"Being a part of that, I think you feel that ownership [for the playground]," said Penny Pape, co-organizer of the recent rebuilding event and one of 3,000 volunteers who built the park 8 years ago. "You want to protect it."

The rebuilding project ran Sept. 18 - 27. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was scheduled to be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the playground.

"It feels good to be able to start something and be able to finish it," said Penny Pape, co-organizer of the rebuilding event. "And then bringing your children or your grandchildren or your friend's children down here and saying, 'I helped build that.' That feels good."
