NEW TOWN, N.D. — Tribal police on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in western North Dakota now have the authority to ticket non-Indian drivers for violations of state and tribal traffic laws.
The Three Affiliated Tribes Business Council recently approved a civil motor vehicle code in response to an increase in traffic due to the oil boom in the region.
Law officers who police reservation roads have been hampered by jurisdictional boundaries. State and county agencies have little jurisdiction on the reservation, and tribal authorities have no criminal jurisdiction over non-Indians.
The new code gives tribal officers civil jurisdiction over non-Indian drivers.
