Landslides prompt closure of Roosevelt National Park's North Unit scenic drive segment

WATFORD CITY, N.D. — Part of the scenic drive in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park has been closed because of landslides.

A stretch of the 14-mile drive had been reduced to one lane during the day and closed at night. The National Park Service says it has now been forced to close the drive seven miles in because of continued land slumping and sliding.

The park itself remains open and is waiving entrance fees while the road is closed.

Park Superintendent Valerie Naylor says the formation of the western North Dakota Badlands is constant. She says the same erosion processes that create beautiful scenery, in combination with a couple of wet years, have led to the road problem.
