VA hospitals in North Dakota affected by heat wave

FARGO — This week's heat wave is causing headaches for Veterans Affairs hospitals in the Dakotas.

In Fargo, the VA hospital has rescheduled more than 50 surgeries. Officials tell WDAY-TV that the building's cooling system had problems keeping up with the high heat and humidity, and that led to some floors and other surfaces becoming wet, possibly compromising the sterile environment needed for surgeries.

In Sioux Falls, two patients in the intensive care unit had to be moved to a community hospital Monday when air conditioning units couldn't keep up. The hospital tells the Argus Leader that Sanford Medical Center donated some temporary cooling units to the VA hospital.
