South Dakota ranked 17th, N.D. 21st in nation's obesity rates

A study released Thursday shows that South Dakota ranked 17th in the nation, with 28.7 percent of adults being obese, and North Dakota ranked 21st, with a rate of 28 percent.

BISMARCK — The Dakotas rank in the middle of the pack when it comes to residents who are obese.

A study released today shows that South Dakota ranked 17th in the nation, with 28.7 percent of adults being obese, and North Dakota ranked 21st, with a rate of 28 percent.

The study was done by Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It found that obesity rates exceed 25 percent in 38 states. A dozen states top 30 percent. Mississippi had the highest rate, at 34.4 percent, and Colorado the lowest at 19.8 percent.

Obesity is associated with health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
