Debra Johnson, Grand Forks, letter: Thanks for success of mental health event

Thanks again for supporting community health services such as our fundraiser.

By: Debra Johnson ,

GRAND FORKS — On May 5, Prairie Harvest Mental Health held its 11th annual Polyester Party Auction to raise money to support mental health wellness and recovery.

I’d like to thank our sponsors, donors and attendees, as well as the board of directors and staff for helping raise more than $10,000 (see our website www.prairieharvest.net for a list of sponsors).

May is Mental Health month. Mental health is as important to our well-being as physical health. Facts:

** Most people with mental illness lead fulfilling lives by living at home, holding jobs and raising families.

** Mental illness can affect anyone, whether or not there is a family history of mental illness.

** In general, people with mental illness are of at least normal intelligence and can enjoy the same success in all areas of life as others.

** As with physical illness, mental illness sometimes goes away on its own. Sometimes, people can make lifestyle changes that help; others benefit from medications or therapy.

Thanks again for supporting community health services such as our fundraiser.
