Bismarck voters on Tuesday to decide bar smoking

City commissioners last fall approved an ordinance banning smoking in bars. The ban was to go into effect on Nov. 1, but a group of bar workers submitted enough referral petitions to bring the matter to a public vote.

BISMARCK — Residents of North Dakota's capital city head to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to ban smoking in city bars.

Those who favor a ban in Bismarck say it's in the interest of public health. Opponents say private businesses should be free to run their operations as they wish.

City commissioners last fall approved an ordinance banning smoking in bars. The ban was to go into effect on Nov. 1, but a group of bar workers submitted enough referral petitions to bring the matter to a public vote.

Voters also will decide whether to allow smoking huts outside bars if a ban is approved.
