DEVILS LAKE — Amtrak says $100 million in upgrades is needed to bridges and track in the Devils Lake area if passenger service is to be maintained to the city of Devils Lake, Rugby and Grand Forks.

Spokesman Marc Magliari says BNSF Railway will make any calls on suspending Empire Builder service in that region because it owns the track, even though it no longer uses it. He says Amtrak would consider any suspension temporary but that once service is interrupted it could be a while before it would be restored.

Magliari says a rerouted Empire Builder would go from Minot to Fargo, bypassing northeast North Dakota.

He says if Congress provides funding for upgrades, they would take two construction seasons to complete.
