A portion of Interstate 29 was closed Wednesday afternoon between the Manvel and Grafton interchanges because of water on the roadway.

A portion of Interstate 29 was closed this afternoon between the Manvel and Grafton, N.D., interchanges because of water on the roadway.

Northbound and southbound traffic on I-29 is being detoured away from I-29, with the exception of commercial trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more and emergency vehicles, according to the North Dakota Department of Transporation.

Northbound traffic on I-29 is being detoured north on U.S. Highway 81 at the Manvel/Highway 81 interchange (exit 152) to North Dakota Highway 17 at Grafton, then east on N.D. 17 back to I-29.

Southbound traffic on I-29 is being detoured west on Highway 17 at the Grafton/N.D. Highway 17 interchange (exit 176), then south of Highway 81 at Grafton to I-29 at Manvel.

The highway patrol is manning checkpoints at each ends of the detour and will turn around all traffic, except commercial trucks and emergency vehicles.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution while driving on roadways covered in high water. Areas with water over the road may also become icy as temperatures drop below freezing.
