Point Bridge closes

The cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks closed the Point Bridge on Minnesota Avenue Friday morning because of rising floodwaters. Also, East Grand Forks bus routes have been modified to adjust for the bridge closing.

The cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks closed the Point Bridge on Minnesota Avenue this morning because of rising floodwaters.

Plans called for the bridge to close by 10 a.m.

The Sorlie Bridge at DeMers Avenue is not yet schedule to close, said John Bernstrom, a public information officer with the City of Grand Forks, on Thursday. However, city officials from Grand Forks and East Grand Forks are meeting this morning to discuss when they might be forced to close the downtown bridge.

“That one we're going to try to keep open as long as we can,” Bernstrom said.

The Red River is forecast to rise above 45 feet, the level at which the Sorlie Bridge closes, by Sunday.

Because of the Point Bridge closure, Cities Area Transit will modify East Grand Forks bus routes. Buses will cross the Sorlie and Louis Murray Bridges rather than the Point Bridge to serve the south end of East Grand Forks. Schedules will change slightly. For more information, call Cities Area Transit at (701) 746-2600.
