BISMARCK — Someone who steals prescription drugs in North Dakota could face a felony charge, even for the theft of a single pill.
The North Dakota Senate voted 33-14 today to approve the penalty. It now goes to Gov. Jack Dalrymple for his review.
The new law says someone who steals prescription drugs in North Dakota could be charged with a felony that carries a possible five-year prison term. It would apply regardless of the quantity or value of the drugs that are stolen.
Fargo Sen. Ron Sorvaag (SOHR'-vahg) says the law is needed because the "street value" of prescription drugs is more than the price for legitimate users.
Bismarck Sen. Margaret Sitte (SIT'-ee) was one of the bill's sponsors, but she said Tuesday the law is an overreach.
