Comedy duo Williams and Ree will be coming to Grand Forks this month after all.
After a potential booking at the Alerus Center this month fell through over concerns about their material and the ongoing UND Fighting Sioux nickname controversy, another local venue has stepped in.
Williams and Ree will perform two shows at the Empire Arts Center in Grand Forks on March 15, according to a press release sent out this morning.
Williams and Ree, which bills themselves as "the Indian and the White Guy" and plays off race for some of their material, will perform 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. shows at the Empire Arts Center on March 15.
Tickets will be $25 and will go on sale on Tuesday, according to the press release. Those wishing to reserve their seats can call (701) 777-4090.
The press release said that the Empire Arts Center has no plans to put any restrictions on the comedy team. A Williams and Ree official told the Herald on Thursday that the duo was asked by someone involved in talks about a potential Alerus Center show if they would refrain from using the word "Indian" in their act.
"The Empire is always open to hosting a wide variety of shows and events for all types of audiences," Cathy Foy, the Empire's executive director, wrote in a prepared statement that was included in the press release. "We see Williams & Ree as a great opportunity to bring a fun and well-known act to our community and look forward to it being a great event."
The press release mentioned the reaction of the local community and Williams and Ree representatives to the potential Alerus Center booking falling through.
"We saw just how much the community wanted to see the show, so we jumped at the opportunity to bring them to the Empire," Foy wrote.
