BISMARCK — Western North Dakota officials want to improve their drinking water, and they think oil companies will be willing to pay for it.
A state Senate bill would set up a regional water pipeline and a governing board to oversee it. The group would sell water to oil companies and rural cities.
Bonds would pay for the project, and the final cost could be more than $300 million. Project supporters say selling water to oil companies could make up that cost in a few years.
The state would back the bonds and would take over the commission if it runs out of money.
The House approved the bill last month. The Senate Industry, Business and Labor committee reviewed the bill today.
The bill is HB1206.
