BISMARCK — North Dakota senators have approved tougher penalties for motorists who drive on roads that have been closed by harsh weather.
Under current law, driving on a closed road is a $20 fine. The Senate today endorsed legislation to raise the minimum fine to $100.
The $100 fine would apply if a motorist was caught driving on a road after police had ordered it closed.
If a driver went around barricades to get on the road, the fine would be $250, and the driver would get four penalty points against his or her driver's license.
Wyndmere Sen. Jim Dotzenrod says driving on closed roads is dangerous for the motorists and people who have to rescue them.
The bill now goes to the North Dakota House. It is SB2157.
