State senator: North Dakota legislators should report lobbyist-funded trips

A Belcourt senator says North Dakota legislators should have to report trips paid for by lobbyists and outside groups.

BISMARCK — A Belcourt senator says North Dakota legislators should have to report trips paid for by lobbyists and outside groups.

Richard Marcellais (MAR'-sel-ay) says his proposal would improve legislators' accountability to the public. But some members of the North Dakota Senate's Judiciary Committee wondered today about whether the bill was too broad.

Committee chairman David Nething of Jamestown says the bill would have required Marcellais to report on trips he took when he was chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. Nething says those reports aren't necessary.

The bill would have required Republican state Senate majority leader Bob Stenehjem to report on his recent trip to India.

Stenehjem missed six days of the Legislature to make the trip. It was paid for by a business promotion group.
