UND sophomore forward Danny Kristo is out indefinitely after sustaining frostbite on the toes of his right foot due to exposure to extreme cold while walking near campus Sunday evening.

Kristo, of Eden Prairie, Minn., is being treated at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Temperatures dipped to –11 that night in Grand Forks with a windchill of around –33. At those temps, frostbite can occur in just over 10 minutes.

“We have been in close contact with Danny’s family,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “My concern is with Danny’s health and his full recovery.”

There is no timeline for Kristo’s return to action.

UND says it will not comment further out of respect for the privacy of Kristo’s family.

Kristo was coming off arguably his best game of the season. He tallied three assists in a 6-0 rout of Colorado College on Saturday night.

The 2010 Western Collegiate Hockey Association rookie of the year has 22 points in 29 games this season.
