FARGO - Norman County Sheriff Jeremy Thornton said a positive identification has not been made on the body found burned inside a car near Fertile, Minn., Monday.
The incident is still under investigation but foul play is not suspected, Thornton said Wednesday.
The body was sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office in St. Paul for an autopsy after it was discovered inside a burned car.
The Norman County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car on fire on Norman County Highway 1 at 7:20 a.m., near Fertile.
Fertile is about 50 miles northeast of Fargo.
A mid-size GM passenger car had gotten stuck in a snow drift on the road. First responders found the car completely burned.
Thornton said no reports of missing persons have been made. He said he believes he knows who the victim is, but is awaiting confirmation.
“We’ve got to be 100 percent positive,” he said. “We have a very good idea who it is.”
