MANKATO, Minn. — The strange recent history between UND and Minnesota State-Mankato took another unique turn when officials postponed Saturday’s men’s hockey game because of a blizzard.

The game will now be played at 4:07 p.m. Sunday in Verizon Wireless Center.

It is the first weather postponement on record for UND. Grand Forks Herald columnist Virg Foss, who covered Sioux hockey for 36 years, said he couldn’t recall a weather postponement, either.

A blizzard warning went into effect early Saturday morning and was extended until 9 a.m. Sunday. Heavy snow and high winds quieted the streets here.

The Sioux team, staying at a hotel across the street from the arena, walked to the Verizon Wireless Center on Saturday morning in order to go through a morning skate. They found out in the afternoon that the game was going to be postponed.

UND, which had planned to drive home after Saturday’s game, extended its hotel reservations for another night and ate a team meal Saturday night at a local restaurant that remained open.

The Sioux (12-5-2) moved into first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with Friday’s 4-3 win over MSU-Mankato on goals from Chay Genoway, Matt Frattin, Evan Trupp and Jake Marto.
