This recipe from an old Women’s Day magazine booklet is perfect for the holidays.

Orange-Glazed Shortbread Squares

3 cups flour

½ cup cornstarch

1 cup granulated sugar

Grated zest of 1 orange

¼ teaspoon salt

1 cup butter or margarine

1/3 cup plus ¼ cup orange juice

2 cups confectioners’ sugar

¼ cup orange juice

2 ounces unsweetened chocolate

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Put first 5 ingredients in bowl. Mix well. Cut in butter until particles are very fine. Add 1/3 cup orange juice. Toss to mix. Gather mixture together. Work quickly with hands until crumbs form into dough. With lightly floured fingertips, press evenly on bottom of lightly buttered 15-by-10-by-1-inch pan. Bake 25 minutes. Mix confectioners’ sugar and ¼ cup orange juice. Cool shortbread, and spread with glaze. Let stand until set. Melt chocolate over hot water, cool and drizzle over shortbread. Let stand until firm and cut in squares.

Yield: 48 squares.
