Petitions submitted for Bismarck bar smoking ban

A group of Bismarck bar workers has submitted signatures to try to refer a new city ordinance banning smoking in bars to a public vote.

BISMARCK — A group of Bismarck bar workers has submitted signatures to try to refer a new city ordinance banning smoking in bars to a public vote.

Spokesman Keith Holzer tells The Bismarck Tribune that the group has double the necessary signatures to refer an ordinance banning smoking in bars beginning Nov. 1 and also a building code for outdoor "butt huts" for smokers.

Assistant City Administrator Keith Hunke (HUNG'-kee) says the city will review the signatures to see if there are enough valid names.

Advocates say smoking restrictions are needed to protect nonsmoking bar employees from secondhand smoke. Opponents say a ban would infringe on personal choices.
