Hoeven's 'stache' could bring national honors

North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven’s famous facial hair could soon earn him national bragging rights, the American Mustache Institute announced Monday. The institute named Hoeven a finalist for the “Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year” award. Also up for the award: Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano.

North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven’s famous facial hair could soon earn him national bragging rights, the American Mustache Institute announced Monday.

The institute named Hoeven a finalist for the “Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year” award.

He faces stiff competition — among the other 18 finalists are Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano, television personality Pat O’Brien and Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville.

Popular voting will determine the winner of the award that “recognizes the person who best represents or contributes to the Mustached American community over the past year,” according to the American Mustache Institute’s website.

The website’s case for Hoeven said he didn’t back down when he announced his bid for the U.S. Senate and some questioned if his mustache would need to be shaved.

“Undaunted, Hoeven proudly shows his flavor saver on billboards all over the North Dakota,” it said. “If elected, he will become only the second Mustached American male in the U.S. Senate.”

Hoeven’s running against Democratic-NPL candidate Tracy Potter to claim the U.S. Senate seat that retiring Sen. Byron Dorgan has held since 1992.

The winner of the award will be announced Dec. 4 in St. Louis at ‘Stache Bash 2010.”
