BISMARCK — Sen. Byron Dorgan today said the federal government had started reimbursing durum farmers for up to half of their fungicide costs.
The North Dakota Democrat says the effort by the Agriculture Department's Farm Service Agency is aimed at helping combat scab disease in this year's crop. About $3 million is dedicated to the program.
Durum is used to make pasta. North Dakota farmers produce half of the nation's crop.
Scab is brought on by prolonged wet weather when durum is flowering. It can devastate fields and has caused widespread losses in past years.
