Mary Jean Dehne’s students are learning a couple of important lessons about life and patriotism this school year.

One is that freedom is not free. The second is that it never hurts to say thank you.

As part of a community service project, the independent learning center students at Fargo’s Ben Franklin Middle School are selling T-shirts commemorating the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

They plan to use the proceeds from the sale of the $10 patriotic-themed shirts to pay for a Veterans Day dinner for local military veterans, said Dehne.
