Greek Chicken with Red Sauce

½ cup olive oil

1 large onion, roughly chopped

1 3-pound chicken, cut into serving pieces

1 cup red wine

2 cups chopped tomatoes

1 cinnamon stick

2 to 3 whole allspice berries

2 bay leaves

Salt and pepper

Heat oil in large pan. Saute onion over medium heat. Add chicken. Brown on all sides. Add wine. Cook for 2 or 3 minutes, allowing it to reduce. Add tomatoes, cinnamon, allspice, bay leaves, salt and pepper to taste. Partly cover pan, lower heat and simmer until chicken is tender. Add small amount of water if sauce becomes too dry.
