The Moving More, Eating Smarter Coalition of Greater Grand Forks’ is sponsoring the second annual Farmer’s Market Iron Chef Competition. The competition will be held during the morning of Aug. 28 at the Grand Forks Farmer’s Market.
Two area chefs will again create a main dish using produce from the farmer’s market. Farmer’s market patrons will have the opportunity to taste-test the dishes and cast their votes to award the “2010 Iron Chef.”
In 2009, the coalition received funding to conduct the first cook-off. Local chefs, Nathan Sheppard, Blue Moose Bar and Greg Gefroh, UND executive chef, participated in the event. Blacked Catfish with Lime Yogurt Sauce and Kohlrabi Coleslaw and Chicken Scampi with Mediterranean Vegetables and Roasted Rosemary Potatoes were served.
In true Iron Chef fashion, the dishes were judged and a winner was chosen. The recipes were then placed on the Grand Forks Health Department’s webpage. Gefroh and Sheppard will provide a delicious demonstration again this year.
This year, the coalition has added another dimension to the event, sponsoring, “Restaurants Go Local Week.” Five downtown restaurants will be serving local produce on their menus during the week of Aug. 22-28. Restaurants participating in this event are: Rhombus Guys, Amazing Grains, Dakota Harvest, Sanders and Toasted Frog.
The coalition’s main goals are to encourage North Dakotans to make smart choices from every food group and to move and exercise more on most days of the week
