Curt Stanley Highness
Curt Stanley Highness, 70, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away Saturday morning, July 10th, 2010, at the V.A. Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Curt was born November 19, 1939 to Chester and Durah (Belanger) Highness in Crookston, where he was raised and graduated from Central High School in 1957. After graduation, he joined the Army National Guard, then entered active service with the United States Navy on January 17, 1958. His service in the U.S. Navy included U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, California; U.S. Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Norfolk, Virginia; and U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia. Curt was honorably discharged as a Radioman Seaman and returned to Crookston. Curt graduated from Ackers Business College in 1968, and then went on to complete the Chemical Dependency Program at Fergus Falls State Hospital and was licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Chemical Dependency Counselor. Curt was certified by ICDPM in 1989. On August 26th, 1961 Curt was united in marriage to Darlene Walsh at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Curt and Darlene loved and supported each other these past forty-nine years. Curt worked at many trades during his life: farm hand, cabinet maker, cement finisher, truck driver, mechanic, Coca-Cola service man, mobile home builder, accountant, maintenance worker for Law Enforcement Center, maintenance worker for Glenmore Treatment Center, chemical dependency counselor and Aldor Home Director of Crookston. He was a talented woodworker, and he skillfully crafted furniture for his family. Family was very important to Curt, and he always strove for a sense of family connectedness. Family reunions were times that he cherished. Curt loved to spend time with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. Curt was always making friends. He was humble about his generosity and kindness to family and friends. Curt’s storytelling and easy conversation shall be missed by all.
Curt is survived by his loving wife, Darlene, of Crookston, MN; sisters, Janet (Jim) Doda, of Crookston, and Gail Stanley of Highland, CA; children, Wayne (Denise) Highness of Florissant, CO, Bruce Highness of Thief River Falls, MN, Connie (Matthew) Peterson, Duluth, MN, grandchildren, Alisa Marie Highness of Florissant, Cedric Sinclair Highness of Florissant, Chase Bernard Highness of Thief River Falls, and Avery Rose Highness of Thief River Falls; great-granddaughter, Evalyn Esther Rose Highness of Florissant; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Curt was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Durah Highness; and sisters, Carol Inman and Barbara Guildibaldi. Curt’s wish was that we not mourn him, even though we miss his stories, laughter, and smiles, but rather we remember that a part of him is in all of us.
