The stabbing death of a 23-year-old man in Thief River Falls has led authorities to arrest a 19-year-old suspect.

Matthew Raymond Shepard was dropped off at MeritCare hospital in Thief River Falls on Monday night with stab wounds, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

A nursing supervisor in the hospital’s emergency room called the sheriff’s office at 10:15 p.m. to report Shepard’s wounds, the department said.

Shepard ultimately died as a result of his injuries, said Dave Carlson, supervisor of the county’s emergency dispatch center.

Daniel Scott Molstad of Thief River Falls was taken into custody in connection with the stabbing, but he has not been charged. Messages left for Molstad at the county jail were not returned Wednesday.

The department’s release says the matter is under investigation and that, for now, no other information is being made public.

Repeated messages left for the deputy investigating the case and the county attorney, along with a message left for the sheriff, were not returned Wednesday.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Thief River Falls Police Department are assisting in the investigation.
